Refill the World, Starting in Our Backyard: A Community Refill Movement Comes to Washington State
Press Releases

Information
A growing community-led movement is bringing refill closer to home in Washington State. Refill the World: Starting in Our Backyard, which launched in Michigan to make low-waste living more accessible, is now expanding to the Pacific Northwest with support from Ecourage’s participation in NextCycle Washington’s circular economy accelerator.
The premise is simple: refill works best when it’s local. By activating trusted partners — retailers, co-ops, distributors, and regional brands — refill becomes part of everyday life rather than a special trip or one-time experiment.
Early pilots show refill succeeds when it is close, convenient, and repeatable. Instead of centralized models, the movement embeds refill into neighborhood spaces where people already shop and gather. In Washington, deployments will prioritize high-traffic community locations (retailers, campuses, and neighborhood hubs) paired with trusted products from local and mission-aligned brands.
As the initiative launches statewide, Ecourage is seeking Washington-based soap and cleaning product producers, food co-ops, refill-forward retailers, distributors, and community hubs to deploy 10 refill machines beginning mid-2026.
Ecourage provides Connected Smart Fill™ technology, enabling controlled, mess-free filling with data connectivity and product integrity. Participation in NextCycle WA supports building refill infrastructure that is scalable, measurable, and rooted in local collaboration.
“With Refill the World, we’re focused on making refill practical at the community level,” said John Minagawa-Webster, Co-Founder of Ecourage. “When local partners lead, refill becomes a habit — not a headline.”
Washington partners now have the opportunity to shape scalable, community-led refill starting in their own backyard.
