Brand Story: KASÉ was founded by childhood friends Reika Alexander, the owner of EN Japanese Brasserie, and Kanae Koike.
After graduating from music college in London, Reika decided to help her brother, Bunkei Yo, expand his restaurant brand, EN, which has more than 100 locations throughout Japan. As the founder of EN Japanese Brasserie in New York, Reika played a pivotal role in introducing authentic Japanese cuisine to America at a time when most New Yorkers’ understanding of Japanese cuisine extended little beyond sushi and sukiyaki. She helped cultivate a deeper appreciation for traditional Japanese cuisine within the American restaurant industry. EN was beloved for over 20 years before closing its doors in 2024.
Kanae was raised by parents who owned a restaurant, nurturing her passion for food and hospitality from an early age. After graduating from university, she worked under Uichi Yamamoto, contributing to the movement that helped establish café culture in Tokyo. After moving to the United States, she became a founding member of Dean & DeLuca Japan and later worked as a corporate buyer, building a career centered on food culture and culinary development.
United by their shared passion for food, Reika and Kanae founded KASÉ Japanese Cooking with the mission of bringing authentic Japanese food culture into the everyday kitchens of American homes.
