From Forest to Farm: Why Cultivated Turkey Tail Matters
Press Releases

Information
Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail) is globally recognized for its rich beta-glucans and naturally occurring polysaccharides associated with immune support and overall wellness.
Historically, Turkey Tail has been primarily wild-harvested, as it grows abundantly on decaying hardwoods and is far less expensive to collect than to cultivate. As a result, large-scale cultivation has long been considered economically impractical.
In practice, wild harvesting presents growing challenges. In China, large-scale pesticide spraying is part of national forestry management programs to control pests and prevent forest disease. While necessary for ecosystem protection, these measures have had unintended effects on non-target organisms, including wild mushrooms such as Turkey Tail. Consequently, it has become difficult to consistently source wild material that meets international standards for pesticide residues and heavy metals.
Seasonal and regional variability contributes to inconsistent bioactive profiles and quality. To address these risks, Biosan began research into Turkey Tail cultivation two years ago, despite its high material demands and low yields. Turkey Tail is a wood-intensive saprophytic mushroom requiring carefully selected, pesticide-compliant hardwood and clean groundwater. Yields remain significantly lower than many commercial species.
In June 2025, Biosan completed its first harvest of organically cultivated Turkey Tail, marking a transition from wild collection to controlled, traceable, and environmentally responsible cultivation. This prevention-focused approach ensures consistent quality and verified safety.
Today, Biosan’s Turkey Tail powders and extracts demonstrate lead levels well below 0.5 mg/kg, fully meeting California Proposition 65 and other stringent regulatory expectations.
