Mon Mon Sauce is rooted in the legacy of my mom — a Korean woman whose food brought people together and helped shape the flavors of old Lahaina. In the 1990s, my mom owned a small restaurant in Lahaina that was known for one thing everyone talked about: her shoyu chicken plate lunch made with her own Kalbi sauce. It was bold, comforting, and unforgettable. Locals still remember those flavors — the sweetness, the smokiness, and the Korean-style depth she brought to island plate lunch favorites.
Those flavors are my childhood. They are the taste of home.
In 2016, inspired by the recipes I grew up watching her make, I started preparing small batches of kimchi and kalbi for friends, neighbors, and the Maui community. I didn't know it then, but it was the beginning of something bigger — the beginning of carrying her legacy forward.
When my mom passed in 2019, everything changed. I felt a deep responsibility to keep her recipes alive, not just for myself, but for everyone who remembered the food she made and the love she put into it. I decided to bring her Kalbi recipe to the market so the community — and eventually the world — could enjoy real Korean BBQ at home, made with clean, organic ingredients and the same heart she cooked with.
Today, Mon Mon Sauce is more than a product.
