Founder Ivan Gutierrez is third generation in the restaurant industry and from a young age he became committed and passionate for the food industry. While working at his family's restaurants he picked up the importance of quality flavors and the persistence it takes to run a successful business.
As a teenager and into his twenties, Ivan worked his way up from a busboy to assistant manager to now co-owning a restaurant in the Latino community of Pilsen, Chicago. Shortly after, he pursued his business degree at DePaul University to contribute to his professional development in hopes of creating something greater for his career. Inspired by his time at the restaurants and education, in 2020 Tierra Negra was born.
In the last four years, he has gone from dreaming up ideas to establishing the business. He's been preparing for the business skills needed to bring a product to market. Incredible resources and mentors such as The Hatchery Chicago, a non-for-profit food and beverage incubator that helps local entrepreneurs and Retail Ready, an online wholesale masterclass, have helped prepare for this. These resources have shown him the importance of leaning onto his community to learn new things such as developing a business plan, creating a brand identity, learning new insights on how larger retail operates, the importance of being ethical and giving back to the community through mentorship and training.
Tierra Negra strives to be a reputable brand whose product has quality ingredients, a variety of flavor, is a convenient authentic staple and a salsa that will enhance your life through meals. The Tierra Negra team is founded on the belief that we can accomplish most of what we set our minds to. We also believe it takes creative, passionate and hard-working individuals to bring a product to life. Keeping that in mind, we understand the importance of diversity in our workplace and how it will continue to positively shape the growth of our business. With our experience we hope to inspire and pave the way for food entrepreneurs to follow their dreams, none which are too small.
