Marich Confectionery

Information

Marinus van Dam's journey began in Holland during World War II, where at just 15 years old, he took a job at a local candy factory to support his family. His daily task was to scrape candy from the factory floors across its four levels. Marinus's exceptional curiosity and work ethic impressed management, leading to his selection for Candy Technology School, funded by the company—an unusual opportunity in 1945.

This educational path continued, allowing Marinus to master every facet of candy production, from handcrafted chocolates to jellies, caramels, taffy, nougats, gums, mints, and licorices. In 1957, seeking the American dream, Marinus left for the United States, initially working for a small confectionery in Ohio before moving to California to join a larger company. His tenure there contributed significantly to its growth, establishing it as one of the nation's premier confectionery firms.

After decades of employment, Marinus embarked on entrepreneurship in 1983, co-founding Marich Confectionery Company with partners. At Marich, Marinus instilled a foundational ethos: understanding every aspect of the business from the ground up. This meant starting with menial tasks like cleaning and gradually mastering candy making. His philosophy, rooted in traditional Dutch values, emphasized the necessity of knowing how to maintain cleanliness and operate equipment—skills essential for effective leadership.

Marinus passed on his expertise to his children, who joined him in the family business. They too began with humble responsibilities, learning not only the art of candy making but also practical skills such as welding, electrical work, and equipment installation—critical for sustaining operations in a family enterprise.

Reflecting on their journey, Marinus's children recognize the universal challenges and rewards of family businesses. Their father's legacy lives on in Marich Confectionery, a testament to his perseverance, innovation, and dedication to quality—a sweet success story shaped by resilience and a passion for craftsmanship.
