La Preferida
Information
Our story began in 1920s when the Henry Steinbarth (a Bavarian butcher) immigrated to Chicago. Recognizing the demand for authentic Mexican meat products within the Hispanic community, he saw an opportunity. Using his background in crafting high-quality European meats, he was able to transition into Mexican staples that honored tradition and authenticity.
In 1949, he launched the La Preferida brand (meaning "The Preferred") with the first packaged chorizo in the United States. It quickly became a household favorite in the local community. Over the decades, La Preferida expanded to include more than 200 unique items, from traditional staples like refried beans and Spanish rice to new organic and low-sodium options, catering to a wide range of dietary preferences.
Through the years, La Preferida's dedication to quality and consistency has made it a trusted brand in kitchens across the country. Now in its fourth generation, the family remains committed to its mission of El Corazón de tu Cocina—The Heart of Your Kitchen—keeping the core values of flavor, family, and authenticity at the forefront of their business. Every product is crafted to bring the tastes and heritage of Mexican cuisine to home cooks, making it easy for anyone to share and enjoy the rich, comforting flavors of Mexico.
In addition to providing high-quality ingredients, La Preferida takes pride in its enduring relationships with both consumers and partners, reinforcing their role as a staple brand within the Hispanic community and beyond. As La Preferida celebrates its 75th anniversary, the company looks toward the future with a commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the same passion for authentic flavor that has defined the brand since day one. For La Preferida, it's more than just food; it's about honoring heritage and bringing people together around the table.
