MINAMI FOODS
Information
Minami Foods was established in 1981 in Hirono, Iwate Prefecture, with a mission to revitalize a rural community facing depopulation and economic decline. Surrounded by mountains and the sea, Hirono is rich in natural resources, including high-quality soybeans. Recognizing the region's potential, the company set out to create jobs and industries that would support local farmers and enhance the community's value.
The decision to produce yuba, a traditional Japanese delicacy made from soybeans, was intentional. Unlike tofu, yuba requires a meticulous and time-intensive process, but this adds significant value to the raw materials. The yuba is naturally air-dried, preserving its delicate texture and enhancing its flavor. Minami Foods further innovated by combining yuba with nutrient-rich seaweed sourced from the Sanriku coast, creating a unique soup that harmonizes the flavors of the mountains and the sea. This product showcases Iwate's natural bounty while reflecting Japan's culinary traditions.
Minami Foods takes pride in producing yuba soup without chemical additives or preservatives, ensuring that every product is safe, healthy, and delicious. This commitment to quality and natural ingredients has earned widespread recognition across Japan. Beyond products, the company's factory has become a cornerstone of the local community. It provides inclusive employment opportunities for parents balancing childcare and individuals with disabilities, fostering a supportive work environment that benefits the entire region.
Through its international expansion, Minami Foods aims to share not only the unique taste of yuba but also the Japanese philosophy of hara hachibu—eating in moderation. Inspired by shojin ryori (traditional Buddhist cuisine), this concept emphasizes mindful consumption and gratitude, encouraging people to savor food in harmony with nature. By promoting this cultural value alongside Japan's celebrated UMAMI, Minami Foods seeks to offer more than a meal—it provides a meaningful connection to the beauty and simplicity of Japanese culture.
Minami Foods remains dedicated to preserving the blessings of Iwate's nature while sharing them with the world, blending tradition with innovation to ensure that these timeless values endure for generations to come.
